This lesson was created using Soft Chalk and was named the second place winner in the 2016 SoftChalk Lesson Challenge. 

This lesson teaches students to:

1. know the structures and functions of DNA and RNA.
2. understand that amino acids are the building blocks of proteins.
3. model the general steps involved in protein synthesis.
4. articulate how the sequence of the four nucleotide bases act as a code for amino acids which form proteins.
5. establish a cause and effect relationship between the nucleotide sequence in DNA and the structure and function of proteins.
6. know that DNA contains regions that are expressed and other regions that are not expressed.
7. know cells in an organism have the same genetic content but the genes expressed by cells within an organism are regulated in different ways.
8. explain the relationship between the regulation of DNA expression and the resulting traits observed in organisms.
9. formulate questions related to the non-protein coding sections of DNA and their functions in an organism which could be tested by scientists.
