CEFR vocabulary wordlists

CEFR vocabulary wordlists

The English Vocabulary Profile site provides information about which words (and importantly, which meanings of those words) and phrases are known and used by learners at each the six CEFR levels.

Site contains information about words, phrases, idioms and collocations. The aim of EVP wordlists  is descriptive - not prescriptive: These words reflect what learners at different levels DO know, not what they SHOULD know....

The Cambridge Vocabulary Profile is a very unique resource for students and teachers to learn more about the vocabulary they use or aspire to use in writing and speaking. Users are able to look up words and see how they are defined along with the CEFR level of an English learner who is able to use and understand the word in terms of that definition. Examples of that word in different real-world sentences show how it is used in context. There are powerful search features on these words; my personal favorite is looking up words based on the subject of writing they appear (such as "Natural World", "Politics", or "Communication"). I love to guide students in using it to increase awareness of vocabulary, including expanding their level of sophisticated vocabulary use. However, students in the classroom will be in need of guidance when learning how to use this tool. It requires registration to log in. Students will then need some explanation in terms of what the CEFR is and what the different levels mean in addition to how to use the website, including searching and clicking into results to see sentences with vocabulary in context. However, the site is generally easy for them to use once they are aware of the functionalities. In the end, the instructor does need to spend some time familiarizing him- or herself with the site before introducing to students.
