How have the U.S. media and education system's representation of the Holocaust shaped the average person's interpretation of the Holocaust?
The U.S. media and education system are the two primary sources from which citizens obtain their information. Whether that be sitting in a classroom listening to an educator, or sitting on the couch watching the news. The education system's focus is on educating children and young adults on facts of the world, whether that be mathematics or history, and prepare them for the real world. The media's goal is similar, but not entirely the same. The media is also there to educate, and inform viewers on current events, but it is also there to entertain and hold viewership. This secondary obligation, along with the fact that media companies aren't held to the same standards as academic institutions, leaves the door open for inaccuracies and mistruths.
