Restoring Sanctity

Initial Assessment

We made an in-person visit to the library to conduct a thorough assessment of its condition. This on-site evaluation is essential for gaining a comprehensive understanding of the library's existing state, including any areas that require attention or improvement. By observing firsthand, we can more accurately gauge the starting point from which our efforts will proceed.

This detailed assessment will serve as a critical reference point, enabling us to set realistic benchmarks and track our progress effectively throughout the project. Understanding the library's present condition ensures that our plans and interventions are based on an accurate and informed perspective, ultimately facilitating more successful outcomes.

Discarding books

We undertook the careful process of disposing of books that were either deteriorated, outdated, or emitted a musty odor. This selective removal was essential for maintaining the quality and relevance of the library’s collection. Before proceeding, we obtained approval from the TVHSS management to ensure that the disposal process adhered to institutional guidelines and policies.

Once the unsuitable books were removed, we turned our attention to the remaining older volumes. These books arranged within the wooden cupboards. By taking these steps, we aimed to create a more functional and appealing environment for the library’s patrons.

Mastering Project Management

Under the expert guidance of Mr. Ganapathy Dharmasankar, we gained valuable insights into the intricacies of drafting project proposals and managing projects effectively. His mentorship provided us with a solid foundation in these essential skills, enabling us to grasp each component of the project management process thoroughly.

We meticulously studied every step involved in project planning and execution, ensuring that we understood the nuances and best practices associated with each phase. This detailed learning process allowed us to create comprehensive and well-structured plans for every stage of the project, thereby enhancing the overall success of our project.

Cleaning

During the preliminary cleaning phase, we began by carefully removing books that were in poor condition or deteriorated. This initial step was crucial in preventing further damage and ensuring that only well-preserved volumes remained in the collection. To complement our efforts, we engaged external resources to conduct a comprehensive cleaning of the entire library.

These professionals undertook the task of meticulously cleaning every corner of the library, addressing areas that may have been overlooked during routine maintenance. Their thorough approach helped ensure that the environment was properly sanitized and prepared for subsequent stages of the project, setting a solid foundation for further improvements.

Building a volunteering group

We assembled a roster of student volunteers who had undergone training through our JSDC's TIPP program, a specialized initiative designed to equip them with the necessary skills for such tasks. These trained volunteers played a vital role in our project by assisting with the meticulous process of discarding books that were no longer suitable for the library’s collection.

Their involvement proved to be particularly beneficial, as their training ensured they understood the standards for selecting which books to remove. This allowed them to handle the task efficiently and effectively. With their help, we made significant strides in removing outdated or damaged materials, thereby advancing our efforts in the library’s renovation process.

Designing the furniture

We engaged a carpenter to explore potential options for repurposing the existing closed wooden cupboards within the library. Our consultation aimed to identify the most effective way to transform these cupboards into functional racks that could enhance the library's storage and display capabilities. During our discussion, we also examined the possibility of leveraging these repurposed cupboards as a means to generate revenue for acquiring new furniture, considering whether selling or otherwise monetizing them might contribute to our budget.

Ultimately, after evaluating various possibilities, we decided to proceed with using the available cupboards that feature glass doors. This choice allows us to retain the existing furniture while also providing an attractive and practical solution. By utilizing the glass-fronted cupboards, we enable students to view the books on display, creating a visually appealing and accessible storage solution that enhances the library's functionality without requiring new resources.

Ensuring Book Count Accuracy

After completing the book discarding process, we conducted a thorough inventory to estimate the approximate number of books remaining in the library. This careful assessment involved systematically reviewing and counting the books to provide a general idea of the collection's current size. While the count may not have been precise, it offered a useful approximation to guide future planning and decision-making.

This inventory was essential for understanding the overall scope of the library's remaining resources. It allowed us to gauge the extent of the collection, which in turn helped us strategize about future acquisitions, organization, and space utilization.

Wall Art

We have designed and executed a vibrant and engaging piece of artwork on the blackboard specifically for the students. This creative project involved thoughtful planning and artistic execution to ensure the final result would be visually appealing and captivating. Our aim was to create an inviting and stimulating environment that would enhance the students' experience and foster a positive atmosphere in the classroom. By incorporating bright colors, imaginative designs, and meaningful themes, we sought to make the blackboard a focal point that would contribute to a more dynamic and enjoyable learning space. This effort reflects our commitment to enriching the educational environment and creating a welcoming atmosphere for all students.
