KHCC is a model for MENA Cancer Healthcare

The complexity and sophistication of cancer healthcare requires a comprehensive and multi-faceted organization to deliver quality outreach, education, research, and treatment to served communities in need.  KHCC has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment and capacities to be that organization.  The four elements of KHCC’s organization provide a blueprint for other cancer healthcare organizations in the MENA region and beyond.

  • Outstanding and Specialized Medical Expertise and Experience:   The community of KHCC medical staff has the expertise concerning the life cycle of cancer which enables them to design and deliver the outreach, education, research, and treatment that results in successful outcomes.
  • Medical Policies, Processes and Procedures:  The KHCC has developed its organization’s management of medical policies, processes, and procedures with evidence-based decisions within a shared governance framework to guide its medical actions and assessment of its outreach, education, research, and treatment of cancer.
  • Medical Facilities and Technologies:  The life cycle of cancer healthcare requires specifically designed education, research, and treatment facilities, equipment, and technologies to enable the expert staff to implement the policies, processes, and procedures needed for best outcomes.  KHCC has developed and partnered with others to bring the latest innovations in medical facilities and technologies for use by its medical staff.
  • Business Models for Sustainable Programs:  The requirements of excellent and comprehensive healthcare must be supported by expert and experienced business managers of financial, facility, and human resources.   The effective blending of medical management and business management has been achieved by the KHCC as indicated by the quality approval by the Joint Commission International Clinical Care organization.

Accelerating the capacity building of other cancer healthcare providers in the MENA region can be achieved by the blending of two strategies:

  • Leveraging the capacities of model cancer healthcare providers (e.g., KHCC), and
  • Building the internal capacities of the developing cancer healthcare providers.

Leveraging capacities can include access and engagement of KHCC’s medical and business experts, procedures, facilities, technologies, and management strategies.  The coordination and collaboration among organizations would require effective and efficient facilitation to ensure KHCC’s services are not compromised while accelerating other’s capacities.  Digitally capturing case studies of outreach, education, research, and treatment where KHCC’s expertise has been leveraged and making these case studies available in an open, online digital library for cancer healthcare professionals to review and develop their expert would be one strategy that holds great promise.   Developing the internal capacities of other MENA cancer healthcare providers can be achieved by on-the-job professional development and mentoring, post-doctoral internships, and inter-organizational placements.   The professional development strategies would be applied to medical staff, facilities and technology managers, and business managers of the organizations.  A key strategy for capacity building will be supporting the MENA organization in achieving their accreditation standards for their own organization.  KHCC and its partners can support the leadership of the MENA cancer healthcare organizations to develop a progression of plans to meet the progression of accreditation standards.
