Please describe the courses you teach.
I teach courses in lecture, theory, and practice.
Describe your teaching philosophy and any research interests related to your discipline or teaching.
As an educator and an equity advocate, I continue to seek ways that my research, service, and teaching interests can support an equitable and inclusive environment. As a faculty member in the Dance Studies program, my goal is to utilize my experience in multiple dance forms, choreography, improvisation, cultural research, and dance pedagogy to build connections between dance, other subjects, and life experiences. In addition, I aim to help students discover and refine their creative voice and cultivate spaces that embrace diversity and progress equity. My approach to teaching is holistic and geared toward student success.
OER/Low Cost Adoption Process
Provide an explanation or what motivated you to use this textbook or OER/Low Cost option. Many of our first-generation college students have responsibilities outside of higher education. As a former first-generation college student, I directly relate to the hardship that purchasing high-cost textbooks and class materials can bring to students and their families. When I heard about the CALM program, I immediately decided to do what I could to ensure my course did not require high material costs.
How did you find and select the open textbook for this course? I consulted with librarians, browsed OER sites, read book reviews, utilized resources from my own studies and research, and evaluated resources.
Sharing Best Practices: I created a list within Library Reserves for my course. Doing this ahead of time allowed me to communicate easily with the librarians so that the course materials could be ready for the beginning of the semester.
Describe any challenges you experienced, and lessons learned. Staying in communication with the library is helpful, because there are some journals and textbooks that needed to be purchased by the library.
