Book Bike Story Time -- Mt. Juliet

First Saturday each month at 10:00 am

Starts at Eagle Park, the Bicycle Playground in Mt. Juliet.that was built as an Eagle Scout Project (2016) by a local boy in Troop 150.

Why do this event?

  1. Promote literacy and the love of books. Reading aloud to children improves listening and socialization skills. (See graphic on the left.)
  2. Teach safe cycling skills to young children, using the Bicycle Playground  created by the Boy Scout for his Eagle project in 2016. 
  3. Encourage the love of bicycle riding among families with young children. 
  4. Increase interest in the local bike club (Veloteers) for young families with children.
  5. Form community partnerships. Both government and private groups. 
  6. Parks and recreation department, Mt. Juliet Public Library, Mt. Juliet Police, Mt Juliet BPAC, Veloteers Bicycle Club,local bike shop (Bikers Choice), and Scouts. 
  7. Let's move in Libraries Movement. (National movement in libraries)
  8. Everyone has a role to play in increasing healthy living, including libraries! Let’s Move in Libraries is an international initiative to get people of all ages and abilities on the path to health.

- Good books to read that help help teach the love of bicycling and reading.

  1. Mike and the Bike and Mike and the Bike meet Lucille the Wheel, by Michael Ward
  2. Gracie Goat's Big Bike Race, by Erin Mirabella. She represented the U. S. in the 2000 and 2004 summer Olympic Games.
  3. Little Red Riding Hood: a newfangled prairie tale, by Lisa Campbell Ernst.  Grandma's wheat berry muffins recipe is included.  Good to take for the children to enjoy after the ride. 
  4. Anyone can learn to ride a bike, by Chris Raschka.   A two time Caldecott Medal winner. 
  5. Hello, Bicycle, by Ella Boyd. About a little girl going from her tricycle to a bicycle. 
  6. Bicycling Rules of the Road; the adventures of Devin Van Dyke,by Kelly Pulley. A fun story to teach the rules of bicycle safety to young children. The end of the book contains the bicycling rules of the road. 
  7. Sally Jean the Bicycle Queen, by Carl Best. A funny story about a girl who out grows her little bike and how she gets a bigger bike. 
  8. Mrs. Armitage on Wheels, by Quentin Blake. A funny story about a lady's bicycle ride adventures. 
  9. Two Bicycles in Beijing, by Teresa Robeson.  The story of 2 bicycles in a shop and their adventures after they are bought. Includes a glossary of Mandarin Chinese terms, and a few interesting facts about sights in Beijing. 
  10. Planting Stories: the life of librarian and storyteller Pura Belpre. Words by Anika Aldamuy Denise.
  11. Little Libraries, Big Heroes, by Miranda Paul. A story about ordinary heroes building community. 
  12. Dear Librarian, by Lydia M. Sigwarth. A true story about the challenges of homelessness, friendship and kindness, and the magic that libraries hold.  All for free. 
  13. The Boy, the mole, the Fox and the Horse, By Charles Mackesy. This is a story that has great messages for all ages.
