What's that bird?

Robin

Robins are easy to recognise because they have a bright red-orange chest and face. You can spot them all over the country: there are over four million robins in Ireland, and they’re not scared of people! They eat insects, fruit and seeds.

How to recognise a robin

Robins have a greyish underbelly and brown back. Their chest and the bottom half of their face is bright red-orange. A robin is a small, plump bird, especially in winter.

Size: 12 cm

Sound: A high, chirpy and short song. Robins are often the earliest birds to be out singing in the garden.

Did you know?

Robins are sometimes called ‘the gardener’s best friend’; when you’re out in the garden digging, they love hopping around on their little legs to find insects and seeds in the freshly dug earth.
