Topic 8: UDL and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Cultural variability in the classroom is the norm not the exception and research shows that culture impacts the way a student receives, perceives, and communicates information.  By applying the three core principles of UDL (multiple means of engagement, multiple means of representation, and multiple means of action and expression) educators can design the diverse approaches that culturally responsive teaching requires. The UDL framework provides a vehicle for addressing cultural variability by creating environments that are flexible, accessible, and that students can culturally identify with.

Topic Learner Outcomes:

  1. Explain how the three driving principles of the UDL framework provide the diverse approaches that culturally responsive teaching requires.
  2. Apply the frameworks of culturally responsive teaching and UDL to foster learner agency.
  3. Examine learning opportunities to include the students’ funds of knowledge (family and community values, lifestyles, and world views).
