Introduction of this UDL Module
Introduction of this UDL Module
This stand alone module guides faculty through the Universal Design for Learning framework, a framework developed by the CAST (Center for Applied Special Technology) organization. In 2002, CAST published the first major explanation of the concepts of UDL, "Teaching Every Student in the Digital Age: Universal Design for Learning." The publication provides research and practices that address the variability in learning. It offers a different approach from the traditional view of "fixing the student" to the contemporary view of "fixing the curriculum." No two students are alike and your goal as an educator is to address that range of variability in your teaching practices. UDL provides the framework to address this range of variability.
There are nine topics included in this introductory module to UDL. The nine topics are:
- The Learning Sciences
- Three Principles of UDL: The Three Brain Networks
- The UDL Matrix and Its Application
- UDL and Learner Goals
- UDL and Assessment
- UDL and Course Delivery Mode
- UDL and Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
- UDL and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
- Implementation of UDL
Professional Development Suggestions:
- Faculty members learning together may find it optimal to have access to a discussion board where they can share their responses to the varied activities in each topic.
- Faculty members learning alone may find it optimal to collect their responses in an e-portfolio as examples of professional development.
- Institutions that adopt this UDL Faculty Module may consider awarding certificates for those faculty who demonstrate completion of the module.
Module Learner Outcomes:
- Explain UDL’s scientific underpinnings, core principles, and how they are related to the variability of learning.
- Apply UDL principles to course design, instructional materials, and assessments.
- Examine how the UDL framework addresses systematic barriers in the learning environment.
