About the Course

KINE 301 Foundations of Childhood Physical Education
Brief Description of course highlights:  The overarching goal of the course is to provide future elementary school classroom teachers with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to teach physical education. The course is a degree requirement and typically enrolls 30 students per section. I have thought about at least one session of KINE 302 every semester since Spring 2017. According to the Grades & Equity Gaps Dashboard, most students enrolled in  KINE 302 across the past five years are female and non-underrepresented minorities (Non-URM).

Student population:  This course, although hosted and delivered by the Kinesiology Department, is designed for Liberal Studies majors.  Required course for all Liberal Studies majors.

Learning or student outcomes:

  • SLO1. Examine the biopsychosocial benefits of physical activity and physical education for children.
  • SLO2. Design physical education learning experiences for elementary school children based on the Skill Themes Approach.
  • SLO3. Advocate for an inclusive climate in elementary school physical education.
  • SLO4. Critique a variety of traditional and nontraditional games, sports, dance, and other physical activities for their ability to develop physical literacy.

Key challenges faced and how resolved: It was frustrating to not find any OER in this area. In my initial search, I had identified quite a few resources, but when I evaluated them, I found out they did not fit the course. Instead, I looked for open access resources.

About the Resource/Textbook

Textbook or OER/Low cost Title:

Brief Description: This course is designed to present a knowledge base of physical education that includes the analysis of movement skills and movement patterns, physical fitness, and how physical education is inherently linked to health and wellness. Also, studies in this course will be children’s motor development and how emotional, cognitive, and social growth characteristics influence motor development.
Student access:  Textbook adoption. Students will not adopt a textbook anymore. Instead, they will adopt this interactive workbook.  The interactive workbook will be available on Blackboard learn.  Students will have immediate access to the interactive workbook and all linked materials are open access.

Cost Savings: Students will save an estimated $50.00 to $100 depending on the book format they would choose.

OER/Low Cost Adoption

OER/Low Cost Adoption Process

Provide an explanation or what motivated you to use this textbook or OER/Low Cost option. I completed the Closing the Equity Gaps workshop at Chico State. Based on my analysis of the Grades & Equity Gaps Dashboard data, I concluded that the course relies heavily on an expensive textbook. Although the 2.08 Equity Gap in this course across the past five years is low (2.08), I wanted to identify actions to decrease the gap. The URM DFW% is 9.09%, and the Non-URM DFW is 7.01%. Therefore, adopting an OER was my intervention to reduce the equity gap in this course.

How did you find and select the open textbook for this course? I searched the databases provided in the OER seminar but did not find anything relevant or of quality that would be suitable for this course. I designed an interactive workbook that relies primarily on open access resources instead.
