This course is designed to address current research and theory regarding the use of multimedia technology to help facilitate learning and to enable us and our students become digitally aware in the 21st century. Students will gain firsthand experience in integrating technology into classroom activities to create learning environments that span academic disciplines.

  • Read carefully the following article to explore Richard Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning. As you read, try and identify the main components of his theory and think of possible ways in which they can be applied to the Caribbean classroom.

Learning Activity 2 - Advantages of using multimedia in the classroom

  • Watch this short video which outlines the advantages of using multimedia tools in the teaching and learning process. After watching the video, you should be able to identify at least five (5) advantages of using multimedia tools and learning aids

Learning Activity 3 – Using multimedia tools effectively in the classroom

Student Activity

This activity involves you transforming a simple PowerPoint presentation into a multimedia interactive video for an online class.

  1. Select a topic of your choice and develop a PowerPoint presentation of not less than seven (7) slides using Microsoft PowerPoint.  
  2. Ensure that at least 3 images are included.
  3. Use a screen capture tool such as Screencast-o-matic to add audio and convert your PowerPoint presentation into a video.
  4. Use EdPuzzle to make your video interactive by adding questions for your students to complete to assess their understanding. 
  5. Please note that your video should be no longer than 10 minutes.
