Basics of Healthcare Revenue Cycle for Industrial Engineers

The revenue cycle is how a healthcare provider realizes revenue from the services provided to patients.  It begins at the initial point of contact with the patient and normally ends when the provider files a claim and is paid for service (or writes off a patient’s account balance if no payment is received).  The processes involved provide excellent opportunities to apply industrial engineering tools and techniques for improvement.  This course module provides an students with an overview of the revenue cycle, various metrics and benchmarks, and a glossary of terms and definitions.  The materials include a lesson plan, reading material, and sample exercise/homework questions that can be used to test and reinforce learning.
