Topic 2: Three Principles of UDL - Three Brain Networks

The Universal Design for Learning framework is grounded in three broad principles which are foundational to learning. These principles are to provide multiple means of engagement, provide multiple means of representation, and provide multiple means of action and expression. These principles align with the neurological organization of the brain; affective networks (the “why” of learning) the recognition networks (the “what” of learning),  and strategic networks (“how” of learning) and help educators address the predictable variability in learning.

Topic Learner Outcomes:

  1. Explain how the affective, recognition, and strategic networks relate to the WHY, the WHAT, and the HOW of learning variability.
  2. Apply the WHY, the WHAT, and the HOW of learning to various scenarios in the learning environment.
  3. Determine and evaluate how the application of the principles of UDL ensure that all learners can access and participate in meaningful and challenging learning opportunities.
