Reading Apprenticeship Inspired Assignment or Lesson

Wendy Metzger, Palomar College
We All Belong: Stories from Diverse Mathematicians

Purpose

The purpose of this activity is to expose students to stories of living BIPOC and female mathematicians. Students will learn about mathematicians that reflect the diversity of our students. The materials were selected because they tell stories about the mathematicians' personal experiences, not just their mathematical expertise. Students will "read and reflect" on these mathematicians stories, making connections between their own life experiences and those of the mathematicians. The goal is for students to recognize that they belong in their math classroom community and can succeed in their mathematical endeavors.

Context

This activity does not depend on students' prior mathematical knowledge. Each "read and reflect" assignment highlights a different mathematician. A good pacing is to assign one mathematician every week or two during the first half of the semester.

Criteria

The students will read an article featuring each mathematician, write a reflection on a discussion board and respond to another student's reflection. Alternatively or additionally, the students will complete a more extensive reflection on a mathematician of their choice in an individual assignment.

Metacognitive Conversations

Students will read and discuss the stories of BIPOC and female mathematicians, and reflect on their own lived experiences, those of their fellow students, and those of the mathematicians.

Details

This series of activities is completed asynchronously, and can be used in face-to-face or online classes. Students read each article about a BIPOC and/or female mathematician outside of class meeting time and post their reflection in the corresponding discussion in their LMS. They also respond to anther student's reflection. The students can be put into discussion groups in the LMS, or have a whole class discussion. They do this for four articles. One article discussion per week is recommended. Alternatively, or additionally, the students can select a mathematician to read about from additional resources below and complete a more extensive reflection. Consider allowing students to complete their discussion contributions and longer reflection in writing or by video.

Text and Materials

Students work with articles about mathematicians from historically underrepresented groups. The materials were selected because they tell stories about the mathematicians' personal experiences, not just their mathematical expertise.
