Reading Apprenticeship Inspired Assignment or Lesson

Talwinder Chetra, Yuba College, Stats 1,Center of Measure
(Mean and Median outliers)

Purpose

Students will learn how outlier affects the mean and median. Students will learn Mean is sensitive and Median is resistant to the outliers.  Students can visualize this concept. This will help students better understanding.

Context

This lesson can be used for Synchronous or asynchronous class (online or in person). This lesson occurs at the beginning of Center of Measure concept in a statistics course. This lesson would be cover at beginning of chapter 3, Students would already have some experience with reading strategies and working in the groups.

Criteria

This lesson will be successful if after this activity student can identity the Mean is sensitive to the outliers and Median is resistant to the outliers.  Or students can compare the effects of the extreme values on Mean and Median.

Metacognitive Conversations

Students will work by themselves or in groups.  They will make connections by reading and practicing some examples to understand overall concept after completing this Lesson.

Details

This Lesson can be done in synchronously as group work or individually work on this asynchronously in Canvas. Students will read and discussion the problems and work on some practice problems.

This is a synchronous activity, where students in small groups read and work through the handout and understand the effects of the outliers. Students have around 25 minutes to read and work in small groups, then we share out to the whole class what they understand the effects of the outliers on mean and median with each group providing feedback to one another for about 15 minutes.
