Expectations for the online learning experience requires just as much effort as a traditional classroom. A successful online learner should have the ability to take full responsibility in becoming an independent learner. An independent learner is one that is self-motivated and self-disciplined. Having a sense of direction is also required of the online learner for the purposes of managing time, maintaining organization and achieving set goals on time. The following tips provide an understanding on some of the characteristics that online learners could use to ensure a life long success in the virtual classroom.
Communication
In order to communicate effectively in an online class, online learners should note that having great skills in communication are important. Online classes are for the most part reading and writing oriented. You will often be asked to read, interpret and apply information from textbooks and writings. Your responses will need to be expressed clearly and directly in writing while following appropriate netiquette.

Netiquette
Just what are some of the appropriate ways to communicate professionally online? One must remember that words and actions can be offensive when we forget to think before responding. Like in any day face to face interactions we should be polite to one another. Ways in which we can achieve that is by having an open-mindedness to peoples thoughts and feelings. Be accepting to feedback from your instructor and your peers. This will make discussions feel comfortable for everyone.

Commitment
We all know it takes commitment to achieve ultimate success. For this we must observe the following to ensure a good understanding on staying committed....
Time Management
-Read course content and syllabus "know what is expected of you"
-Maintain a schedule or calendar in which all assigned materials and deadlines are noted.
Participation
-Be able and ready to participate for at least 12 to 15 hours and at least 5 to 7 days a week per course.
-Learn to work individually and with other classmates to be able to complete projects.
Attendance
-Prepare yourself ahead of time to avoid missing a class by making sure you have a working space, strong internet connection and a functional computer.
- Ultimately, the responsibility is yours to ensure there is always a backup plan in case you encounter any problems with connection and technical malfunctions.
Technical Support
You are never alone when it comes to requiring technical assistance. If you encounter any issues during the course of your online experience here are some tips you can follow....
1. Check to see if internet connection and equipment are functioning properly.
2. Contact your IT help desk.
3. Have a backup plan to make contact with your instructor about these issues.
