Bone Physiology

Maintenance of Blood Calcium Levels

Blood calcium is important for many physiological functions - muscle contraction, nerve synapse function, blood clotting, and, of course bone structural integrity. The skeleton serves as a repository for excess calcium and as a reservoir when calcium is low. The following link will supplement the PowerPoint slides for the course in explaining how the body maintains blood calcium homeostasis.

The following video may clarify the processes that maintain calcium homeostasis.

Bone Repair

Since bones are living tissues, damage to the tissue is often repairable. Follow this link for additional information on fracture types and bone repair. You will notice in the following video that the names of fractures may differ from the link or your text.

You can ignore the soundtrack of the next video but it shows how messy fractures can be repaired.
