Identify and evaluate the resources available to youth and families struggling with
addiction and/ or mental health issues in the community and implications for the role
within the Child and Youth Care practitioner.
2. identify and classify a diverse range of mental health disorders commonly found in Child
and Youth Care clinical practices.
3. describe dynamics related to substance use/abuse (e.g. attitudes, values, the impact of
addictive behaviors, etc.) and the impact on individual mental health, family and society

4. describe the risk and protective factors associated with substance abuse and diverse
mental health disorders, and the relationship of protective factors to Child and Youth
Care intervention
5. identify best Child and Youth Care practices (e.g. assessment, intervention and referral)
relevant to serving adolescents, and their families, impacted by substance abuse and/or
mental health issues.
6. employ Child and Youth Care intervention dynamics related to behavioral change for
addiction and/or mental disordered persons.
7. describe a social constructionist view of mental disorder and understand the application
of Child and Youth Care (strength-based) practices in mental health settings.
