EDF 1005 - Introduction to Education

This survey course includes historical, sociological, and philosophical foundations of education, education governance and finance of education, educational policies, legal, moral, and ethical issues, and teaching professionalism. Students will be provided information on the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices, Florida Standards, and the Professional Educator Competencies. Students must complete at least 15 hours of field-based experience with children and youth in schools or similar settings, not via virtual film or the Internet: fingerprinting and background checks. Backgroundchecks will be required of every student through their respective school district BEFORE anyobservations are undertaken at the public schools. GCSC has articulation agreements only with Bay, Gulf, and Franklin school systems for EDF 1005 observations.

Pedagogical Approach

Students will review many pedagogical approaches in this course to develop their pedagogy.

Learning Outcomes

Given the successful completion of EDF1005, the student will be able to:   

  1. Apply historical knowledge to today’s practices. 
  2. Identify critical factors associated with effective schools. 
  3. Identify the legal aspects of education and understand how governance, laws, and policies are enacted at the local, state, and federal levels. 
  4. Compare and contrast critical educational philosophies and their influences on education.  
  5. Describe the attributes of a professional educator. 
  6. Identify characteristics of ethical behavior in teaching and how they relate to appropriate decision-making. 
  7. Identify critical social factors that impact learning. Identify key cultural factors that impact learning. 
  8. Recognize students’ learning needs when selecting the standards, developing the rationale, and designing the specific learning outcomes. 
  9. Distinguish appropriate instructional strategies, materials, and technology to design independent and group instruction, expand students’ critical thinking abilities, and provide learning environments encouraging students to gain and apply knowledge. 
  10. Create instructional practices to accommodate different learning needs, developmental levels, cultural backgrounds, and linguistic development. 

Assessment

One Research & Review Assignment paper: (200 points) 

Three Discussion Board Topics: (170 points) 

Five Field Experience / Classroom Observation Reflections: Fifteen hours in the classroom followed by five completed field observation tasks (60 points each = 300 points). They are required for course completion.

As required by the Florida Department of Education, fifteen hours of observations in public school classrooms (grades K-12) are exclusive to this course. If you are taking another education course, you must complete 15 additional hours of observations in a separate set of classrooms.   One

Academic Integrity & Five module chapter quizzes: (350 pts.) These will come from your required readings within each module. All quizzes and exams are open books/notes. 

MIDTERM (110 points) and COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM (260 points): The midterm and final exams will be online and MUST be taken.  

Other Information

This course comprises chapter readings with quizzes, 15 hours of documented field observations in public schools, exams, discussion board topics, and one research and reflection paper. All assignments and tests, except for the Final Exam, must be completed by Sunday at 11:59 a.m. Late assignments will result in deducting 2 points per day. Observations and Observation forms WILL NOT count as late throughout the entire course. Students who plan to conduct observations outside of Bay County must contact the county's school board to determine the county's background check procedures. Please see the Syllabus for additional information regarding out-of-county observations. Use the School Contact List to set up appointments for your Field Observations. 

Course evaluation will include multiple assignments/methods. All course assignments will be collected using the Canvas learning management system. Scoring rubrics will be used to define criteria for mastery, provide feedback, and score/evaluate all assignments except for exams.
