Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Just updated for Spring 2010. This tutorial demonstrates how to use college library for research, from finding books to articles and how to cite sources. Includes quiz to reinforce learning at the end. Created by a group of librarians at the John M. Pfau Library at California State University San Bernardino.
Concerns:
Some content might benefit from additional examples to let students compare the visual on screen with the text instructions. For example, in "Understanding Citations" some citation diagrams might benefit from onscreen examples showing the article on the same page as the diagrammed citation. Quiz is only available through Blackboard for California State University San Bernardino students.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The tutorials cover basic topics students need to know about library services and how to use catalog and database searches. Within each of the 5 sections the mini "lessons" builds on previous concepts. Under "finding a book" you find "Find a book by topic"..."author"..."title"...then "locate a book on the shelves".
Concerns:
Some content might benefit from adding more information about concepts and some graphics didn't seem to relate to the content that was being discussed.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The screens were visually attractive and easy to navigate. The tutorials are easy to use and visually appealing. Each section includes review questions to reinforce learning.
Concerns:
Timing on some screens seemed to move too slowly. Some of the tutorials had audio and some did not.
Other Issues and Comments:
Could benefit from adding more opportunities for students to select an answer or include a few more quiz questions at the end of each tutorial.
