This is a very short module on Internet Literacy. Basically the module discusses the quality of information found on the Internet and covers examples such as false photos, phony authors, and inaccurate information. There are links to other sites, a very short clip, and a link labeled "assignment".
Type of Material:
Presentation
Recommended Uses:
This web page is not recommended for use in high school or college.
Technical Requirements:
In order to view all the content of this site, it is necessary to download Quicktime 7 for Windows from Apple. When downloading Quicktime the web page has to be closed, requiring the viewer to go back in to the web site later, after downloading the program.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
The learning goal of the site is to teach Internet literacy. Students are given examples of online hoaxes and mis-represented materials, and then asked how this relates to today's online environment.
Target Student Population:
The targeted population is students using the Internet for searching information.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Basic computer use.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Slightly entertaining.
Concerns:
Content is out of date. The dates of the articles via links are 2000, 2004, 2004, 2005, and 2002.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
Again slightly entertaining.
Concerns:
This material is not effective. When linking to the assignment, for example, it simply asks if the reader uses social networking. Then the second question is: What advantage does it offer or face to face POT networking? (The spelling error "or" is in the assignment itself.) These questions are NOT related to the articles that are linked in the module.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Very simple to use after installing QuickTime 7, which took quite a few minutes.
Concerns:
Very low demands in terms of ease of use.
Other Issues and Comments:
The assignment page says "due April 21", but there is no class referenced on the web site, and no university referenced directly on the site.
There is NO narration with this module and in actuality no video except for a very short clip (less than 1 minute) that shows a joke on unknown sources credited to an investment firm.
