This is one of the language learning modules in the USC Chinese Language Program's "Treasure Box" site. The main page of this module consists of several links. The first three links take the user to Business Vocabulary, Business Phrases, and Business Documents. The Business Documents site provides useful samples of resumes, merchandise inquiries, credit checks, insurance, etc. The rest of the links on the main page of the module are external links.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The module has a clear purpose, and it is organized for the purpose of progressive learning of business language. The external links provide examples of real life use of business language. They take the user to various Chinese business/commercial web sites in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Concerns:
The alphabetically arranged words and phrases in the Vocabulary and Phrases sites are not presented in context. It would be useful to learners to see some of the most common business words and phrases used in context, even if they are used in invented sentences.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The teacher can use the various learning sites in this module for teaching business language as well as for teaching culture. Materials can be used in class discussions and collaborative group assignments. External links are more suitable for advanced students to use as supplemental reference materials or practical assignments/projects outside class.
Concerns:
English translation is missing on the resume page in the Business Documents section.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Navigation is relatively simple. The main page of the module has a well-designed background and animations related to business
Concerns:
The purplish background in the Business Vocabulary and Business Phrases sections could be less harsh on the eye. The addition of images would make the site more stimulating. The external link to the Electronic Trade for Chinese Investors site is not working. Margins are not aligned on some pages.
