A visual introduction to probability and statistics.
Type of Material:
Simulation
Recommended Uses:
High School, College General Ed, College Lower Division, lecture.
This is a great companion site for either the book written by the authors of this website or any introductory book in probability and statistics.
This website could also be used as a group or individually.
Further this can be used by the lecturer to demonstrate a concept to the whole class.
Technical Requirements:
Javascript Enabled Browser
Identify Major Learning Goals:
The purpose of the website is to provide hands-on learning of key statistical concepts by giving the learner a chance to manipulate input parameters and visualize the resulting output.
Target Student Population:
High School, College General Ed, College Lower Division, College Upper Division, Graduate School
Specifically, an elementary statistics class, elementary math class and basic probability class.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
High school math
Basic statistics and probability
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
1. Interactive learning of fundamental probability and statistical concepts
2. Authors have a draft of the accompanying textbook linked on the website.
Make statistics interactive! A visual powerful tool presents the general notion of probability and statistics. There are not many of this type of interactive material. This is an innovative material. The content is appropiate.
Concerns:
The biggest concern with the material is that it tackles a very limited number of concepts. One such example that stands out is hypothesis testing. Also it has limited distributions under the probability module.
It does not provide the references (a book or article) if the student wants to do some review from the original reference.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
1. This material can be used in class for demonstrating the concept by the instructor.
2. The authors are working on a book companion to the web application that includes more concepts
Students could learn a lot in a short time making statistics interactive. The item increases the potential for student learning.
Concerns:
The material has very limited concepts. One fundamental concept that is missing from the visualization is hypothesis tests.
It would be helpful to provide the student learning outcomes to see some of the statistics as a tool making decision.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The application tackles a few concepts but does it in an appealing way. It is very intuitive to use.
It is visually appealing for the student and of high design quality. The site is in working order. The material is also available for Spanish speakers.
Concerns:
It would be helpful to add some ideas that could make students think about the use of statistics as a decision making tool.
