Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
This material is very clear and easy to understand.
The professional graphics and Youtube integration make it engaging for students and very easy to follow.
This is a promising resource, although not all modules on the site deliver similar quality.
Concerns:
The earlier modules are more complete and have a higher quality.
In an effort to make use of open resource materials, some of the later chapters come across as a hodgepodge of material, and/or incomplete.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The learning goals for each module within the material are readily identifiable.
Examples of each concept make it easy for students to apply concepts and enhance their learning.
The resource promotes a conceptual understanding of various aspects of financial accounting.
This open-access text has a variety of ways for students to achieve learning goals.
Concerns:
Not sure that the student quizzes are anything a professor using the site would be able to access.
Learning objectives for modules should be clarified. For example, Excel videos included links to three videos on using excel, that’s great, but it would be nice if we knew which of the three are particularly recommended and why.
The variety and sporadic inclusion of some of the materials throughout modules is so diverse that some adopters would be confused as to what to use without studying the entire site.
No assessment of student learning is included.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The use of this open-access book is intuitive and makes learning enjoyable.
The site's website has a clear and consistent layout that makes the content readily accessible.
It is very easy to navigate and contains a significant amount of information for students to access.
Very nice access to practice quizzes, using the Orchard Study Guides on select modules.
Several “quiziz” in a couple modules were interactive, as is also the flashcards
Concerns:
The sporadic nature of what is provided and how is the general concern. Much of the module’s materials are fabulous....But this is an ambitious project.
The issue goes to one of promising much depth in terms of many modules for financial accounting course, and being able to deliver in a consistent fashion.
Other Issues and Comments:
Some inconsistencies and errors: For example: on the financial statement module, nice to have the practice problem...I am puzzled though by where it said “solution to self check activity” – it didn’t appear to show anything using my chrome browser. And what was the self-check activity there? Unclear. Acc Equation module ok Internal control chapter – light defines the 5 COSO components and nothing more. This would make it hard for someone using this to distinguish if they assume all modules are of equal duration. Under cash module and Acc Rec module– there was no lecture – only two quizzes. The flipquiz wouldn’t load for either module. The quiziz did load – of 8 preview questions, two were internal control related so the matching of content to expected was not perfect, although the other questions were fine. Inventory module was empty except for two quizzes.
