This is an online database style presentation of the 24 possible order combinations of entry of voices in the exposition sections of JS. Bach’s 3 and 4 voice fugues. The classification system uses circles to denote the voices as well as the entry of each. Clicking on the different types shows the learner which of the 3 and 4 voice fugues in Bach’s Das Wohltemperierte Klavier I and II, and Die Kunst der Fuge match each particular pattern.

Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The strength of this site is in offering a visual illustration of the possible combinations of voice entrances in a fugue. This illustration allows students to easily comprehend and classify fugues by their voice entrances.
Concerns:
There is no true explanation of the circle graphs used. Learners would need to understand the underlying theory to understand and utilize the information being provided. It would be easy to become very confused very quickly if the learner did not have the prerequisite knowledge.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This would be an ideal tool to reference for an assignment that requires identification of the various entry patterns in Bach’s fugues, or to use in the studio to quickly reinforce performance similarities between fugues.
Concerns:
This is not a course or a lesson, so there are no stated learning objectives. Without guidance from the one assigning this reference tool, or a learner comprehension of the elements presented, this tool would not work well.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Once the learner figures out how to use the tool, it is easy to reference the various entry patterns and immediately pull up identification information on the fugues that use them.
Concerns:
The website is not accessible and generated nearly 50 errors when checked with the WAVE web accessibility evaluation tool. There are no clear instructions on how to use the tool and it could be difficult for some learners to quickly utilize it. The layout is not particularly user friendly or engaging.
