Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
This site provides the Rice Virtual Laboratory Simulations including the Sampling Distributions Simulations and the OnlineStatBook Simulations. At the end of every section a set of questions and explanation available when the answer is wrong. A set of questions of how to review the main points of the concepts, there is an example with the data file and the R code to find out the answer. There are available the version in pdf of the book and the e-Pub (e-book). One theme common to all of the sections is that they cover concepts and ideas important for other chapters in the book. Each section includes a list of prerequisites that include links to the prerequisite material resources. There are also many videos that go over the section’s material.
Concerns:
In some sections are few or none examples how to apply the contents. The book is not for a specific discipline, it uses examples based on several disciplines. The videos are not closed captioned.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This site is valuable for students, professionals and academics who want to study and review statistics. Promotion of statistical literacy and the necessity of data are included in some exercises that provide data files. The content is well written and can go well as a major resource for the statistics class.
Concerns:
This material fails to address statistics as a powerful tool in making decisions.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The materials are very well-organized, and it is easy to use and navigate. The videos that appear in some sections helps to address the contents.
Concerns:
It would be helpful if some exercises do make decisions based on data. The Web ARTIST considered in one of the exercises of the Chi Square chapter has a non secure connection. Many of the interactive activities are written in Java which is not supported by most browsers.
