This hands-on activity demonstrates that "You get what you inspect." One of the main take-outs from this activity is that as a manager and a team leader, you will only get what you inspect. You have to constantly evaluate each of your team member’s performance and ensure they have the right skills to perform their task perfectly and always be ready to offer your guidance to ensure they are doing the best job possible.
Type of Material:
Simulation
Recommended Uses:
This is recommended as a classroom exercise because of the interaction required for the activity.
This activity could serve as a "second" icebreaker activity after the team members have gotten introduced.
Another thought to initiate this activity is after a workshop has begun, and the facilitator may decide to emphasize a topic on leadership and management characteristics in the workplace.
Technical Requirements:
Firefox ver 85.0.1
Adobe reader ver 21.001.20135
Microsoft 365 ver 16.0.13530.20440
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Understand that a leader must constantly evaluate each of your team member's performance and monitor their skills to ensure they have what is needed to complete their task(s).
Learn that the team leader provides the necessary guidance to give the team members instructions.
Would be helpful to know generally the team members' capabilities of being a leader before the activity begins.
Target Student Population:
Upper level management class
Any class in which leadership is discussed
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Advance preparation is necessary because materials are required for the activity.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Everything the instructor or trainer needs is provided on the website and is broken down into materials needed, instructions, and what to include in the debrief.
There are links to other games, activities, and leadership and management activities available on this website.
Concerns:
There is advertising on the website; many items are available for purchase in addition to the free items which include games, activities, and leadership and management activities.
A problem would occur if there were not enough team members to divide into groups of 5. Then, the instructions must be modified.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This exercise can be used in multiple settings and the information on how to run the exercise is easy to understand and available on one website.
The teaching-learning goals can be altered to promote discussion among the team members.
During the team leaders' debrief, they should be encouraged to direct the blindfolded participants differently so during the discussions, they can all reflect on the words "you get what you inspect".
Concerns:
The instructor or the trainer may want to develop a brief explanation for the exercise as well as a few goals to make it relevant to their course or the training.
Would suggest some additional questions to stimulate discussion after the activity is complete.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The activity can be very engaging for all participants.
It is the responsibility of the team leader to make the discussions entertaining, productive, and informative.
No technology is needed.
Individuals with certain disabilities can participate, as well. If participants with disabilities need additional assistance, then the team leader has to determine how to accommodate them.
Instructions are clear and the directions provide the necessary information for the activity which allows it to be engaging for the participants.
Concerns:
Instructors and trainers would need an appropriate setting with enough room as well as the necessary materials to make this work.
Because of the face-to-face requirement for the activity, this would not be appropriate for an online or a virtual training session.
Other Issues and Comments:
This is a simple leader-team activity. I personally hesitate to participate in any activity which requires blindfolding individuals to prevent accidents.
