Type of Material:

Recommended Uses:
Each year is hallmarked by a specific topic and has approximately four essays. The essays support the general conceptual argument for enhanced civil rights and policies to assure minorities have better access to societal resources.
The State of Black America can be used as a resource - one of several for a particular research topic assigned to the students. The actual assignment is up to the instructor. For example, the topic may be divided into class teams who report on the essay assigned plus additional resources. The team's projects may then be combined into an overall product. Teams may also use the essays assigned for in class or networked discussions in a distance learning LMS chatboard. The material could be supplemented with other sources on the topic.

Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The material is very valuable to the understanding of Black America in 2020 and the issues faced during that time. There is an emphasis on the impacts of Covid-19 on Black Americans and the pandemics role in bringing the systematic inequalities of American democracy farther into the consciousness of society. Each essay points to other resources that are available. The Executive Summary supplies demographic data concerning the topic and makes reference to the other essays.
Concerns:
The essays do not make any attempt to comment on each other so they remain independent essays.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The 2020 equality index with data definition and graph representation is provided along with several lessons learned during the Covid-19 era of 2020. This can easily be translated into a learning activity. Articles can be assigned to enhance learning of concepts as they are presented or offered as source material for essay support material. The Virtual Series resource on the website could also be used to supplement learning in the classroom or used as a post lesson reflection assignment.
Concerns:
There are no sections which supply teaching suggestions or interactive learning and evaluation of learned concepts. As a learning tool the resource may require time for the instructor to create and develop learning activies beyond the time one might have available.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
As a resource material the quality of the publication and navigation is great. It is self-contained and does not require instructions to be usable. There is a supplemental virtual series that goes through the content of the 2020 report and includes speakers in various positions that include elected officials, activists, leaders in health, education, and economics.
Concerns:
Although intuitive in nature, there is no one place that has instructions for the maximal use of the website.
Other Issues and Comments:
This is an annual series with a yearly theme so the user should consult other additions.
