Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The material is very valuable to the understanding of Black America in 2019 and the issues of equality faced at that time. The focus on democracy and increasing the vote of Black Americans in the 2020 election is reflective of the time period. Data maps are great resource tools that can be used to support learning. There are several editions of this annual report available that are a great resourse also. he Executive Summary supplies demographic data concerning the topic and makes reference to the other essays.
Concerns:
The 2019 report is not the most recent edition of State of Black America. The newer edition for 2020 is available and there is a big shift in focus between the two issues. A user would want to be aware of the annual nature of the material.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The data maps are a great tool that can easily be integrated into learning activities on the subject matter they represent. Articles can be assigned to enhance learning of concepts as they are presented or offered as source material.
Concerns:
There are no learning objectives easily identified and the subject matter is broad in scope making the material valuable but requiring specific learning goals to be provided to the students, so they are able to identify what learning the material is focused on. As a learning tool the resource may require time of the instructor for creation and development of learning activies beyond the time one might have available. There are no sections which supply teaching suggestions or interactive learning and evaluation of learned concepts
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The layout is consistent from year to year. It's web based and easy to navigate and in good working order and up to date for each year.
Concerns:
Although intuitive in nature, there is no one place that has instructions for the maximal use of the website. The E-Reader embedded within the resources is slow to upload content for use.
Other Issues and Comments:
Because this is a webpage that houses several years of State of Black America Reports, other relevant articles and virtual series need to be reviewed to better represent the extent of the reference material available. This review is reflective of the 2019 - State of Black America Report only.
