This text covers an overview of nursing history, professional roles, nursing education, legal and ethical areas related to nursing care, evidence-based practice, the culture of nursing, patient care, technology and informatics, and nursing theories. Study aids offer the potential for learners to assess their knowledge related to specific areas of nursing. Illustrations are pleasing and engage the reader. The systematic and orderly presentation of content supports ease of use.

This LibGuides-based open textbook was created through a Round 13 Textbook Transformation Grant. The text covers an overview of nursing history, professional roles, professional education, legal and ethical considerations, evidence-based practice, caring, the culture of nursing, technology and informatics, and nursing theories. A backup PDF of the entire text and a .zip file of individual PDF chapters is also available for download.

This text is an overview of key aspects in nursing. Major core areas are provided in general detail. The learner has the potential to identify major components of nursing history and practice. This would be a great resource for learners to get an understanding of historical figures in nursing and key nursing concepts. This interest can be further satisfied by seeking additional information from other resources.

Concerns:

Some areas of the text provide minimal detail on the topic and subjects within the topic. For example, three sentences were included under "Other Pioneers" among the chapter on "Historical Influences On Nursing Practice".

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

The quizlets at the end of each chapter could be used for assessment of learning, very helpful.
The teaching learning goals are noted clearly in the introduction to this text. The organization and key content supports learner identification of important aspects pertaining to nursing. Having a basic understanding of nursing dynamics, learners can develop a clearer conceptual understanding of information presented. Content could be used as a foundation for further exploration on topics identfied within this text. In addition, this text could serve as a foundation for in-class debates, identification of key areas for further research, or for development of a student presentation on these topics.

Concerns:

Hopefully the links and quizlets be maintained for current information and to monitor weblinks--great resources!

The software was easy to navigate, and the layout was logical.
Having a detailed table of contents and a consistent format enhances the ease of use.

Other Issues and Comments:: Great work with the ease of use and the completeness of information in this text. Wonderful for an introduction to nursing class, at all levels.
