This complimentary eBook features 12 top professionals offering graphic design, UI, UX, and visualization tips on areas including Highlighting Learning, Aesthetic Considerations, and Tricks and Tools.
Type of Material:
This is a reference material.
Recommended Uses:
I would recommend these as a supplement to a course; perhaps as a focus of deeper research or practice.
It's a useful reference book for any designer, instructor, or facilitator.
Technical Requirements:
This is a PDF file. Once I created and account on the site hosting it (which seems an intrusive step), the file quickly opened in my default settings.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
This appears to have been written for the novice or the experienced designer of online learning materials. The "tips" are generally brief and do not introduce indeas that one would not find elsewhere. They are important reminders, however, and the purpose seems to be to help those who are returning to the field or who are refreshing their knoweldge before beginning new projects.
Target Student Population:
College Upper Division, Graduate School, Professional
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Background in training, designing learning materials, and presentations. Experience as a designer is helpful.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
- Clear and concise presentation of generally accepted principles of design
- Give insight into the field as experienced by professionals
- Some tips are research-based
Concerns:
The lists and tips are very useful, however, it may be helpful to organize them better and to give more references to the reader.
The book will benefit from adding examples of projects and assignments.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
- Broad overview of the field
- Practical as well as theoretical tips are presented
Concerns:
It's a reference material, however, additional links , resources, project examples (similar to the "e-learning heroes" site), would make this book stronger.
Less advertisements would make it an even better resource.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
It's an easy and fun read; great resource-as part of other materials assigned in class or given for a reference to a professional.
Concerns:
Although the registration for the site is free, that point is distracting.
Unfortunately, access to any of the materials on the e-learning guild site requires logins.
Other Issues and Comments:
This is a good material to add to a teaching toolbox or a professional's set of references for work. It's not, however, a tool that can assist in teaching and learning all on its own. More development is needed. An instructor can add assignments, and, possibly, scenarios, to make this book more useful.
