Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:

Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
K-12 Educators can create a grid of topics to share with students. The grids are a collection of topics focused on a common theme. Each topic can hold an unlimited number of recorded video responses from students or others. Students do not have to have accounts on Flipgrid. Educators can give students access vis a grid link, a grid code, embedding grid, or a QR code. users can also import a video on both computers and mobile devices. After they select the green plus button, there is a green import icon. Select that and follow the prompts to import an MP4, MOV, or WEBM video file. Grid owners have control over the videos posted-- they can edit the name, hide the video, delete it permanently, or move it to another video.
The strength of this tool is that it is free and easy to use. The user can create a video of 15 seconds or 90 seconds and then discard and redo if necessary. Flipgrids can be integrated into some learning management systems. There are templates available as well as users' flipgrids that can help those new to the product to see its possibilities.
Concerns:
There is an upgrade available at $65 per year which allows users longer videos (up to five minutes) as well as assessments and rubrics.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The key to making Flipgrid be viable in a teaching situation is to be sure students have access to a device with a camera and mic. From there, the potential is really unlimited. One iPad at the back of the room where users can take turns sharing or individual devices would both work. The targets with Flipgrid are communication and discussion. Responses are 90 seconds or less (for Flipgrid One), but much like a tweet, this can help users learn to get to the point in a timely manner. Getting started is very easy. Educators create a free account and then 1) create a grid, 2) add topics, and 3) share with students. One can quickly learn how to use the tool.
Concerns:
None.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Flipgrid is easy to set up, use, and share. Educators will find many uses for this social networking tool. (The paid version, Flipgrid Classroom offers additional features for educators.) Flipgrid works within any LMS or website. For Microsoft Teams and Canvas, Flipgrid can be fully integrated. For other LMS and websites, you can embed a fully-functional Grid. The Flipgrid website is clearly labeled with key components listed across the top, including a FAQ section and a blog that showcases ways users are implementing this tool.
The Flipgrid team works hard to make sure all students have a voice in the conversation! Flipgrid is COPPA, FERPA, and 501 Compliant. Videos can have transcriptions turned on under Grid settings (no captioning available). IBM Watson will auto-transcribe videos so deaf and hard of hearing students can participate. Educators can also edit those transcripts under the student's video details within the Flipgrid Admin. Students can submit their own transcript as a Response link along with their video.
A Help Center is available with multiple topics for students and educators. As well, there are short videos linked within the Help Center's materials.
Concerns:
None.
