This is a site of Shell Companies that explains the corporate policy towards business integrity. This could be used as an example in a business class of how a company approaches ethics.
Type of Material:
Reference Material
Recommended Uses:
- This is a great flipped classroom site where reading can be done ahead of time, before a face to face class.
- Or, this can be used as a debate type exercise, where the approach is debated among class members.
- Or, an excellent analysis that could be done to compare another company approach to the same issue in corporate governance.
Technical Requirements:
No special requirements. A person need Internet access and PDF reader. I assessed this site using Google Chrome
Identify Major Learning Goals:
- Learn how one company approaches:
-Human Rights
-Social Responsibility
-Code of Ethics
-Corruption
-Sustainability
Target Student Population:
- Undergraduate and graduate business courses
- Specifically, corporate governance classes or ethics classes, but can be a module in any business course
- Has applications in any discipline
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Would have a prerequisite discussion of what students know about companies' beliefs and values
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
- A very complete examination of all the sustainability and corporate governance topics of a modern company
- Complete explanations of each of the tenets and values and how they should be applied
- The material is current and relevant
- The material can be used in multiple class activities or assignments
Concerns:
- Research is not always clear, but the material is based on sound principles
- A context for the assignment/exercise would be good, especially to target a student on what is relevant for discussion or an assignment
- Material could be a lot to cover, thus a faculty would likely need to help provide context
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
- Simple statements began each pamphlet followed by clear and direct explanations
- This would be an easy topic to develop for the classroom as an activity or assignment
- A student can learn a lot about corporate governance and being socially responsible
- A faculty can assess how well a student can synthesize material or make improvements/critique the material
Concerns:
- The material is not written to build upon concepts sequentially, thus a faculty may need to focus attention to certain sections
- A faculty will need to assess any prior knowledge that may help a student be successful in using the material
- A faculty will have to establish what learning goal is associated with the material
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
- Clear, direct, simply worded, easy to use
- A student would easily be able to navigate the material
- A student would be engage by the layout and the material downloads
- Quality of the PDF files are very good
Concerns:
- Instructions would need to be provided by a faculty
- Not sure it meets readability software requirements
- Did not see any addressing of the visually impaired - relies heavily on visuals
Other Issues and Comments:
- I have no issues with the material - it is VERY comprehensive as an approach to corporate social responsibility and corporate governance. As most materials, educators did not develop it, thus, a faculty has to be engaged to give guidance to students on learning objectives and context for assignments.
- It would be great if all companies put this kind of material out for the public - it holds them to the statements.
