This material presents an introduction to the Internet of Things (IoT), technologies used and the most used processors and tools in Education and Industry.
Type of Material:
Powerpoint Tutorial, plus a 38 minute YouTube video.
Recommended Uses:
Individual self-paced learning.
Technical Requirements:
Internet connection
PC, tablet, mobile device
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Learn about the basics of IoT. What are the components and how does IoT function overall. After the brief introduction, the tutorial provides a somewhat detailed comparison of low-end microprocessors.
Target Student Population:
Any undergraduate student of electrical, electronics, computer science or IT streams can use the material.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Basic understanding of computing. Some programming experience and awareness of binary number systems.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Good slides.
Embedded video of the speaker.
Very simple and easy to understand.
Concerns:
Audio, especially in the beginning, is dominated by the speaker's breathing. This is quite distracting. Same issue at the start of the second segment at minute 14 or so.
The speaker moves around a bit as well, so the video appears shaky at points. Since the speaker is not standing in front of a blank wall, the constant movement is noticeable and bothersome.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The content is put together really well. Topics covered are relevant, and the progression of material is good. Very effective if used as an introduction session to IOT.
Concerns:
The introduction is for beginners. Once past the introduction, there are many details on a comparison of various low-power microprocessors. This might be a good combination for a longer term series, like the summer school that the video is part of. However, as a stand-alone tutorial, it is not clear how the two pieces are tied together.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Very Simple and easy to understand.
Concerns:
No closed-captioning.
