This is an inventory (survey instrument) that is intended as an example of how this product looks and may be useful. This is copyrighted, it is available for purchase, and it provides a 360° view of emotional intelligence of one person (that is why this is an example only). There are many categories, including multiple perspectives from different people in many different categories.
Type of Material:
Reference material
Recommended Uses:
This may be used as a supplement for any course that uses or examines emotional intelligence as an aspect of leadership, teamwork, and management in general. There is a significant amount of detail with this report so it can be used to demonstrate how extensive emotional intelligence applications may be.
Technical Requirements:
Viewed with Mozilla/Firefox version 39, Java 7, update #45, Internet Explorer version 11
Identify Major Learning Goals:
- Student will be able to analyze feedback from a 360 Emotional Intelligence report
- The student will understand the different aspects that are included in emotional intelligence.
Target Student Population:
This can be used in either undergraduate, upper level or graduate courses in business. It is certainly easy enough for general education (freshmen-sophomore), but the detail is so extensive it may be too much for general education.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Ability to understand and interpret data in xy scatter chart with quadrants
Understanding of emotional intelligence from other courses such as general management or organizational behavior.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
- Good example of a 360 emotional intelligence report
- Can be an effective HR, leadership or business learning activity
- Extensive amount of detail that can provide insight into various applications and impacts related to emotional intelligence.
Concerns:
- No context is supplied with this resource which is classified as a presentation so the user has no background knowledge of who the person is or what was the purpose of the EI survey.
- The actual feedback to the performance report starts on page 10 but and without adequate instructions this important information cannot be utilized.
- No research or links to research create a static document.
- There is also a concern that emotional intelligence has not been supported by research, or by Daniel Goleman himself (no definitive "proof" per se), so this can be informative but perhaps limited.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
- The strength is in the amount of detail and the extent to which this can inform management practices for personal development.
- The effectiveness would literally be realized with personal change, not necessarily from viewing this report.
- The usefulness for others would be to spend money and actually completed the inventory for themselves - which would provide, of course, far more extensive information than reading somebody else's report
- Useful as a sample performance report as long as background context is supplied.
Concerns:
- Since this is a report on an individual, the potential effectiveness is extremely limited because it's only good for the person who actually took the inventory.
- The content of the resources is only useful if the student is familiar with performance measures and the sample feedback document is used in relation to content delivery
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
- Sample report is easy to skim to view the types of information contained in a 360 emotional intelligence report.
- Useful if used as an assignment to analyze for possible suggestions on how to turn weaknesses into strengths.
- Inventory itself (EI360) is laid out and easy to read.
- Extensive detail provides insight into the various aspects of emotional intelligence.
Concerns:
- Without any context supplied with the material, the instructor and student cannot use the material.
- XY scatter chart with quadrants are not accessible.
- It is easy to read but it's not of much use to anyone else other than to demonstrate how the report works and the extensive detail which can be involved in emotional intelligence
Other Issues and Comments:
The key issues have already been addressed; these include the fact that this report is written on someone else and it's nothing that can actually be used. This is also a sample of a report that can be purchased, so in and of itself is not particularly useful. However, the detail is interesting.
