This YouTube video revives an overview of removable storage devices. This is the last video in a series. The video focuses on optical discs and drives, legacy floppy disk drives, and Read Only Memory-ROM. The video is approximately 7 min. and 34 seconds in length.
Type of Material:
Video clip.
Recommended Uses:
Would be useful for any course that covers computer hardware.
Technical Requirements:
An internet connected device that can run a YouTube video, speakers or headset.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
At the end of this video, the viewer should be able to identify the different types of removable storage including optical discs and drives (CD/DVD/Blu-ray), legacy floppy disk and drives, and read only memory (firmware). In addition, the viewer should have a good understanding of the differences between CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray optical devices as well as how to update firmware (flash).
Target Student Population:
High school, freshman - sophomore college, continuing education-anyone who's taking an introduction to information technology or a computer literacy course.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
As this is the final video in a series, it would be suggested that the other videos in the Computer Hardware series be viewed in sequence.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Presenter is very good at explaining technical concepts in simple terms, such that viewers with only basic computing hardware knowledge would be able to understand the concepts.
Concerns:
Not all removable storage devices are addressed. There is no discussion about USB flash drives or SD cards. It is possible these devices are discussed in other videos. However, when talking about removable storage, it would seem appropriate that these devices be discussed here. Also, there should be a discussion about encrypted vs. not encrypted flash drives.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The presenter targets one concept (how optical media works) very thoroughly and does not use computing jargon so the information is readily understandable.
Concerns:
None.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
Very easy to use as the student only has to connect to YouTube and click the play button.
Other Issues and Comments:
Very good introduction to removable storage. Please discuss flash drives (different kinds), what to look for when buying a flash drive and/or a SD card.
