Civil Rights Readings
Intended for high school students, this collection of texts can be used for ELA classes when studying non-fiction literature as well as for social justice research projects. This Bookmark Collection uses a variety of sources, from personal accounts of specific people to historical information of change in different parts of the country, to teach students about civil rights leaders and the movement. Students will be able to explore themes of resistance, social justice, and equity, and trace how the defense of human rights by various people altered laws and culture in the United States. This collection includes voices of less well known people who are historically marginalized, including those of women and those of the LGBT community. They will learn about the struggle against oppression in specific places and get a broader understanding of the people involved in addition to Martin Luther King Jr. The students will learn about the idea of pacifism and peaceful protests and the framework of peace-keeping as a way to social change. This information will allow them to learn about different groups of resistance at the time, and give them a way to apply this lense to people and historical events in other subjects.
