Learning Exercise
Mutations in hemophilia and cystic fibrosis
This activity allows students to use bioinformatics tools to identify mutations found in hemophilia and cystic fibrosis. In the process key concepts about transcription and translation are also reinforced.
For students to be able to determine follow mutations from DNA to protein. They should be able to explain why some mutations in DNA have more of an affect on protein activity than others.
Assessment
This is given as an out of class activity after a lecture on transcription and translation. The students are then given an online quiz to assess what they learned from the activity. You could also collect and grade the worksheet if you had a smaller class size.
