Adaptive Leadership Simulation: Crisis at Clearview Technologies
This simulation, "Crisis at Clearview Technologies," is designed for students studying leadership in organizational contexts. Participants take on the roles of ten key stakeholders in a fictional technology company navigating a critical crisis. The simulation explores leadership styles, communication dynamics, and problem-solving strategies. It challenges participants to address four interrelated problems while collaborating in a dynamic, high-stakes environment. Facilitators can use this simulation for in-person, hybrid, or online courses to engage students in role-playing and decision-making exercises.

Instructions for Use: Preparation: Assign each student a role from the ten character profiles (provided below). Share the Participant’s Guide, which outlines the setting, background, and the four major challenges faced by Clearview Technologies. Provide role-specific scripts to each participant. Scripts include agendas, leadership styles, communication styles, strengths, and weaknesses. Simulation Setup: For online courses, use a discussion forum, collaborative document, or video conferencing platform to facilitate the role-play. For in-person or hybrid courses, organize students into groups and provide a quiet setting for discussions. Execution: Begin with a virtual or in-person stakeholder meeting, moderated by the facilitator. Encourage participants to stay in character, using their scripts to guide interactions and decision-making. Allow time for open discussion and structured problem-solving for each of the four challenges. Debriefing: After the simulation, hold a class-wide debrief to reflect on the leadership styles observed, the communication dynamics, and the resolutions reached. Facilitate a discussion on how different approaches could have led to alternative outcomes. Four Interrelated Problems: Product Failure Crisis: Clearview Technologies faces backlash after a flagship product malfunctions, causing widespread customer dissatisfaction. Employee Retention Issues: Key employees threaten to leave due to unclear leadership and lack of career growth opportunities. Sustainability Concerns: An environmental group accuses the company of unsustainable practices in its manufacturing process, threatening its public image. Stakeholder Tensions: Investors demand immediate profits, while the leadership team advocates for long-term R&D investments.
